Why is it important to treat swelling?
Answer: All swelling injures tissue and can increase the risk for infection. Often tissues become hard over time and treatment can be more difficult. Allowing tissues to swell can also cause difficulties with personal care activities, physical activities and may make clothing and shoes uncomfortable to put on and wear.
Are there any times when swelling can’t be treated?
Answer: In general, if swelling is due to a heart or kidney problem or to poor arterial circulation, you likely cannot be treated. However you would need to discuss the option of edema treatment with your physician.
When is it a good time to start edema treatment?
Answer: It is best to start treatment in the early stages. As soon as you notice swelling or issues with scarring from surgery, see your physician and ask for a referral to edema care.
How often should I expect to be seen in treatment?
Answer: You will be provided with an individual treatment plan after your initial evaluation with your therapist. Appointments can range from just 1 or 2 to several depending on your personal needs.
Who provides edema care?
Answer: At Fairview Rehabilitation Services, both occupational therapists and physical therapists who have participated in advanced training and are certified in the area of edema treatment, provide edema care.
Do I need a physician’s order to get treatment?
Answer: Yes, you are required to have a physician's order to obtain treatment. Please click….to obtain a copy of a referral form to bring to your physician to fill out
How do I make an appointment?
Answer: To make an appointment, please call the Edema Treatment Center most convenient to you.
Is treatment covered by insurance?
Answer: Most insurance plans will cover some or all of your edema care. Deductibles, co-pays and percent of coverage can vary. It is best to contact your insurance plan to discuss coverage opportunities.
Are compression garments covered by insurance?
Answer: Insurance plans may cover all or a portion of the cost of compression garments. Please contact your insurance provider to discuss coverage.
