Fairview Cardiac Rehabilitation

A comprehensive approach

People recovering from a cardiac event such as a heart attack, bypass surgery, or other heart-related event, can benefit greatly from cardiac rehabilitation services. Fairview’s comprehensive rehabilitation services help you  participate in daily life and work at the highest level possible. Through education and exercise, cardiac rehabilitation increases your understanding of heart disease and reduces your risk of further heart-related events.

Our medical team includes cardiologists, nurses, registered occupational and physical therapists and exercise physiologists. Together, they coordinate your recovery with your primary care physician, critical care nurses, registered dietitians, respiratory therapists, psychologists, social workers and other health care professionals.

Conditions we treat
We treat individuals recovering from:

  • Heart attack
  • Heart surgery
  • Angioplasty
  • Angioplasty
  • Coronary bypass

Treatments we offer
Cardiac rehabilitation generally occurs in three phases. As your heart's function and stamina increase, you can expect to progress from one phase to the next.

Phase One
Inpatient rehabilitation begins in the hospital after a heart attack, heart surgery or other heart-related event. We help you begin light activity to increase your exercise tolerance and physical strength. You’ll learn more about your diagnosis and cardiac risk factors, and improve self-awareness of your body’s response to exertion. When you’re able to leave the hospital, you may be referred to outpatient rehabilitation to continue your recovery.

Phase Two
Outpatient rehabilitation emphasizes exercise and education following hospitalization. We’ll work with you to:

  • improve you cardiovascular fitness and endurance, muscular strength and flexibility
  • develop healthy lifestyle habits, including exercise and nutrition
  • modify behaviors that put you at increased risk for further heart-related events
  • provide support as you return to activities of daily living and work.

Outpatient cardiac rehabilitation is usually held in a small group setting three times a week for up to six weeks. Your individualized care plan is supervised by cardiac rehabilitation therapists and is monitored by an electrocardiogram, blood pressure readings, heart rate and your rate of perceived exertion.

Phase Three
The Maintenance phase focuses on your return to independent exercise and usual physical activities, and your continued healthy lifestyle changes. Community-based cardiac rehabilitation programs provide supervised aerobic exercise, stretching and flexibility, strengthening and relaxation in group settings. Cardiac rehabilitation therapists work with you to reinforce healthy lifestyle habits, providing resources and support for your ongoing recovery. Home programs are tailored to your needs, abilities and the equipment available to you.
