Course Description:
Although many patients receiving hematopoietic stem cell transplants arrive at the hospital at normal or close to normal funcational levels, they frequently develop functional limitations. These limitations can adversely affect their quality of life and their ability to discharge directly home. The impairments may include decreased range of motion and strength, impaired balance, and decreased activity tolerance. Immobility, graft-versus-host disease, cancer fatigue, and side effects of medications may contribute to these impairments. In this session, we will present the steps we took at the University of Minnesota Medical Center, Fairview to develop a physical therapy (PT) program to identify and address the needs of our patients with Blood and Marrow Transplant (BMT). We will include the reasons for re-evaluating our program, our survey of practice at BMT programs around the country, a review of the literature, and the subsequent development of exercise and education programs for both in-patients and out-patients. Plans for future program development will also be discussed.
