Christie Heikes, MD
Orthopaedic surgeon Christie Heikes, M.D., earned her medical degree from the Univeristy of Minnesota, in 2002 and then finished her residency at the University of Minnesota, Orthopedic Department. She completed her Orthopedic Sports Medicine Fellowship at Minnesota Sports Medicine in the fall of  2008. While at the University of Minnesota, Dr. Heikes competed at the division one level in both track and cross country. She continues to be involved in athletics to this day. Her experience and continued activity level gives her an excellent understanding of the unique challenges that face athletes and active females of all ages. She will see patients at Minnesota Sports Medicine in Eden Prairie and Minneapolis. She will see general orthopedic patients in additional to her specialization in sports medcine and women's orthopedics.

Course Description:
The presentation will outline factors that are often associated with affecting female’s orthopedic health. Genetics, Bone structure and alignment, muscle activation and firing patterns, fat deposition patterns, physical demands and hormonal issues will be discussed.  These will then be related to such common injuries as Physeal, ACL, overuse, stress fractures and osteoarthritis.  There also will be time allotted for discussion of these topics and more.

*This course is eligible for MN Board of PT Category 1 continuing education credit.*

Course Objectives:
Identify common factors that can influence a female orthopedic health
Explain the impact hormones play in the injury process
Descried interventions for common aliments

Course Agenda:
6:00-7:00pm- Factors affecting female orthopedic health, including, Genetics, Bone structure and alignment, muscle activation and firing patterns, fat deposition patterns, physical demands and hormonal issues
7:00-7:45pm- common injuries such as Physeal, ACL, overuse, stress fractures and osteoarthritis
7:45-8:00pm- Discussion
