Speaker(s):
Marcia Margolis, PT, ATP is a physical therapist with an emphasis in Rehabilitation and Seating and Wheeled Mobility. She is a graduate from Indiana University, and supervised the PT staff of the Rehabilitation unit at the University of Wisconsin before moving to Minnesota in 1993.  She is a seating and wheeled mobility consultant for the Fairview system, and is certified by RESNA (Rehabilitation Engineering and Assistive Technology Society of North America) as an Assistive Technology Practitioner. She attends the Muscular Dystrophy and ALS clinics weekly, and is the physical therapist participating in several Muscular Dystrophy research projects with the Neurology Department. Marcia has significant experience in the area of neuro-rehabilitation, home accessibility, and equipment needs and procurement for persons with neuromuscular diseases, spinal cord injury and mobility impairments.

Course Description:
The process for evaluating and providing justification for durable medical equipment, specifically wheeled mobility, has significantly changed in the past few years. This course will help Rehabilitation professionals for futher understand the process neccesary for patients to obtain seating and wheeled mobility equipment. Participants will learn how to evaluate for and justify a wheelchair for patients, specifically power wheeled mobility.

*This course is eligible for MN Board of PT Category 1 continuing education credit.*


Course Objectives:

Identify 3 disease processes with variable presentation, necessitating either a manual or power wheelchair.
Describe 3 components of the evaluation process necessary for appropriate wheelchair justification to be completed.
Identify a piece of equipment that will provide seating, positioning, and independent mobility needed for a patient to complete their activities of daily living.
Describe 3 benefits and 3 limitations of both tilt and recline seating and positioning systems.
Identify 5 necessary components of power mobility documentation and coverage criteria.

6:00-6:30pm- Evaulation Process
6:30-7:00pm- Wheelchair Components
7:00-7:30pm- Seating and Positioning components (pressure mapping, if time)
7:30-8:00pm- Documentation= Letter of Medical Necessity
