Speaker(s):
Margaret “Peggy” Kratz, MS/CES Peggy graduated from The College of St. Catherine with a Bachelor’s degree in Physical Education. She earned her Master of Science degree in Exercise Physiology from St. Cloud State University. She is a Certified Exercise Specialist through the American College of Sports Medicine. Experience includes coaching swimming at all levels and working as a fitness consultant/trainer. Currently, she has fifteen years of experience as a Cardiac Rehab Therapist with Fairview Hospitals.
Christine Peterson, OTR/L, CES Christine graduated with a B.S. degree in Occupational Therapy from the University of Minnesota “summa cum laude” in 1988. She received her Certification as “Exercise Specialist” from the American College of Sports Medicine in 1993. For the past 18 years Christine has worked as a cardiac rehabilitation therapist with in-patients and out-patients recovering from heart and lung disease. She has taught a class on “Assessing and Interpreting Vital Signs” for the Occupational Therapy Program at the University of Minnesota for four years. Christine also teaches a class in the community on primary and secondary prevention of coronary artery disease.

Course Description:
This course is intended to explore the physical therapist’s role in contemporary cardiopulmonary rehabilitation. Topics of common pathologies, assessment tools, and appropriate rehabilitation intervention will be covered. Students will complete a case-based assignment to assure comprehension of content in these areas.

Course Objectives:
Upon successful completion of this course the student will be able to:
• Express an understanding of the scope of practice of cardiopulmonary rehabilitation in the in-patient and the out-patient setting.
• Describe the underlying pathology of cardiac and pulmonary diagnoses commonly treated in the cardiac rehabilitation setting.
• Describe normal anatomy/physiology of the cardiorespiratory system.
• Express an understanding of normal cardiorespiratory anatomy and physiology in response to exercise.
• Identify six means of assessing cardiorespiratory response to exercise.
• Recognize signs of an abnormal exercise response.
• Write an exercise prescription including at least four components.
• Demonstrate the ability to adapt an exercise prescription based on underlying pathophysiology.
• Understand role of pharmacological factors on the exercise response.
• Identify coronary artery disease risk factors.
• Identify five stages of behavior change and appreciate types of interventions most effective at different stages.
