A home sleep study helped Allen feel a lot better

Allen completed a home sleep study.

My name is Allen Arseneault. I’m 36 years old and I live in Blaine with my wife and two very active sons, ages 5 and 2. We recently moved to Minnesota from Toronto, Canada, where my wife and I met and were married.

Before I did a home sleep study through Fairview Sleep Centers – Brooklyn Park, I felt miserable all the time. I was always tired, and I was starting to get depressed. I wasn’t sure if I had a sleep issue or if I was tired because we get up a lot at night with the kids. I also snored a lot, and it was very loud. My wife was always poking me in the ribs and telling me to roll over. Driving in to work in the morning was brutal because I was so exhausted, and staying awake after I ate was almost impossible. I was scared to eat anything for fear of getting tired at work.

My mom has sleep apnea, so after taking all of that into account, I thought maybe I might have it too. One of my New Year’s resolutions was to take better care of myself, so I went to the doctor at the Fairview Clinic in Blaine and described my symptoms. He suggested I go to the sleep center.

The staff there was very friendly to work with. I had no problems at all. They gave me the opportunity to do a home sleep study rather than an overnight study at the sleep center and sent me home with the equipment that very day. Everything was already hooked up. A timer was set so that the equipment automatically turned on and started recording exactly when it was supposed to. They even had most of the wires hooked up so all I had to do was lay down and go to sleep.

The next morning I returned the machine to the clinic. The sleep study showed that I have severe sleep apnea. They prescribed a continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) machine that same day and showed me how to use it.

Using the CPAP at night doesn’t bother me. I started using it and immediately started feeling better. Any slight inconvenience of using the machine is worth it, knowing I’ll wake up the next day and not be tired. I noticed the difference right away. I felt like a brand new person. I woke up feeling energized. I wasn’t scared to eat something for fear of getting tired. Before I began using the CPAP machine, I would just “zone right out” when I was tired, and my memory was awful.

The home sleep study worked well for me. I feel much better now that I have this little machine.
Are you at risk for sleep apnea?
If you have been told that you snoring loudly, or wake up feeling tired even though you slept for more than seven hours, you may have sleep apnea. Learn more about sleep apnea, or take our sleep apnea online assessment.

If you think you might have sleep apnea, we can help.
At Fairview Sleep Centers, we offer overnight sleep studies to test for a wide range of sleep issues. Qualifying individuals can also conduct a home sleep study to test for sleep apnea.

Treating sleep apnea with Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP)
If your sleep study shows that you have obstructive sleep apnea, a CPAP may be used during the night to improve your sleep and breathing. Using the machine will help keep your airway open so that you can breathe easier and sleep better. Trained and certified sleep technicians at a Fairview sleep center will fit you with the equipment prescribed by your sleep specialist and teach you how to use it.
