The MINI Project partners with community groups to immunize minorities and uninsured Twin Citians against influenza. The project provides free annual flu shots at non-clinical, non-traditional settings such as churches and community centers.
Clinics have been held at a variety of places including African American churches, a Hmong flea market, a Tibetan Community Center, an Ethiopian Oromo Lutheran Church, a Buddhist monastery, three mosques and a Somali mall. Populations reached include Latino, African American, Native American, Somali and East African, West African, East Asian, Tibetan and Burmese. The partnership has provided 16,000 immunizations since 2006.
The Fairview Foundation gave $10,000 to jump-start the project, and it has provided staff time, influenza vaccine and ongoing funding. The project received the 2009 Minnesota Hospital Association community benefit award.
