Select Fairview clinics host Halloween candy buy-back to give treats to troops
Halloween is just around the corner and trick-or-treating is on the minds of many families. Children may be excited about treats, but parents are apt to be concerned about the trick to keeping too much candy out of kids’ hands.
This year, 11 Fairview clinics in the greater Twin Cities metro area are hosting a candy buy-back, allowing kids to cash-in on a healthy alternative to sweets.
These clinics will pay kids $1 per pound for unopened Halloween candy. The candy is donated to military personnel serving overseas. You do not need to be a clinic patient to bring in your candy.
Helping limit candy consumption
“With more than one third of American kids either overweight or obese, we’re doing our part to help parents moderate their children’s candy intake this holiday,” says Lynne Fiscus, MD, a physician at Fairview Clinics – Eagan.
“The kids get some money and know their candy is being sent to a Minnesota service member overseas,” she adds. “There’s a lot to feel good about with this program.”
Last year’s buy-back program resulted in a sweet haul—more than 320 pounds of candy was collected and distributed to overseas troops.
